1 – 4 This is an emerging research area, and whilst home-based VR applications may offer a range of benefits for rehabilitation, they also bring a new level of challenges for researchers to overcome. Consequently, therapists are now beginning to evaluate VR systems that can be delivered and subsequently self-managed by patients within their own homes. As well as enabling the development of complex and expensive VR systems for use in controlled clinical environments, recent technological advances have also led to the emergence of more affordable and accessible systems for use in a range of settings. Technology is developing rapidly and the interest in applying virtual reality (VR) technologies within rehabilitation is growing.
